Man City 3-0 Blackburn: Match Report

Threesy does it for City

Manchester City's three top scorers were all on target as the Barclays Premier League leaders overpowered Blackburn to move five points clear at the top of the table in a 3-0 win.

In the week Carlos Tevez was welcomed back to training, leading strikers Mario Balotelli, Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko reminded manager Roberto Mancini of their talents in a one-sided win at the Etihad Stadium.

Blackburn barely mustered a shot on goal as they were completely outplayed and their defeat might have been embarrassing but for a string of superb saves by Paul Robinson.

Robinson was most impressive early on and did brilliantly to keep the scoreline at 1-0, after Balotelli's strike, at the interval.

Yet his mistake led to Aguero's second and he could not prevent City's inevitable stroll to victory.

While Balotelli, Aguero and Dzeko celebrate scoring 52 goals between them this term, relegation-threatened Rovers must regroup quickly for their battle ahead.

The evening was all about City, for whom Balotelli, sporting a mohican, made an impressive return to domestic action after a month away from it due to a four-game ban.

Yaya Toure's return to the Premier League for the first time since January 3, due to African Nations Cup duty with Ivory Coast, was also welcomed as City set themselves up for their final title push.

Balotelli joined Aguero up front and Adam Johnson came in for Samir Nasri in a reshaped attack.

Blackburn handed a debut to new signing Marcus Olsson, who joined his brother Martin in the team, while Radosav Petrovic featured. After illness during the week, Steven N'Zonzi did not enter the fray until the 70th minute.

Yet aside from Robinson, little was seen of any Rovers players as City dominated from start to finish.

The hosts gave an early warning of their intentions as Balotelli tested Robinson with just a minute gone.

David Silva and Johnson combined on the right before the England winger's low cross was turned sharply at goal by Balotelli, but Robinson saved low to his left.

Johnson created space to shoot from distance but Robinson parried and the ball was hacked clear.

Robinson was in action again moments later as a Balotelli free-kick took a slight deflection off the wall and needed to be pushed away.

Blackburn finally cracked on the half-hour as City counter-attacked with Silva releasing Aleksandar Kolarov on the left.

The Serbian powered forward and pulled the ball back for Balotelli who, six yards out, instinctively clipped it past Robinson at the near post.

He celebrated by unveiling a T-shirt with a message telling his girlfriend Rafaella he loves her - a rather more modest offering than the previous 'Why Always Me?', which referred to his notorious madcap, off-field antics.

Blackburn wanted a penalty as they made a rare attack moments later.

Morten Gamst Pedersen was shaping to shoot when he went down under a Nigel de Jong challenge but referee Mike Jones played on.

Despite being beaten, Robinson continued to impress, saving another sharp effort from Silva.

There was better to come from the former England goalkeeper as he palmed away a backheeled Vincent Kompany volley at a corner and he deserved the luck as Toure put the rebound wide.

Toure went close again just before the interval but again fired wide while Aguero shot across goal from a tight angle.

City showed no let-up as the second half began with Toure powering forward to tee up Johnson, whose shot was deflected wide.

The seemingly inevitable second goal came after 52 minutes as Robinson showed his fallibility.

The goalkeeper spilled a Silva corner and Aguero was on hand to blast in on the half-volley.

City suffered a moment of alarm just before the hour as Toure landed awkwardly attempting to cross and Aguero also pulled up.

Both required treatment but were able to continue.

Balotelli left the field to a standing ovation with 12 minutes remaining, moments after taking a knock in an aerial challenge in the area and requiring treatment.

His replacement, Dzeko, wasted little time in making an impression as he headed the third two minutes later.

Kolarov found space down the left and whipped in a superb cross for the Bosnian, who turned in his 18th of the campaign.

Blackburn finally made Joe Hart work in injury time, but Ayegbeni Yakubu's shot was weak and was greeted by ironic cheers from the home fans.

Dalglish: We must take Carling Cup chance

Liverpool boss wants final to mark the start of something special at Anfield

Liverpool reached the Carling Cup final after defeating Manchester City in the semis
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has called on his players to start something big by winning the Carling Cup final on Sunday.
The Reds take on Championship side Cardiff at Wembley Stadium aiming to win their first piece of silverware since the FA Cup in 2006.
And Dalglish says he wants to make the match the springboard for Liverpool to finish the season strongly.
"We can't afford to relax, because this could be a decent season for everybody"
- Kenny Dalglish
"Yes, winning the trophy can be a big thing for the club, and you can be proud of that achievement, because every football club that wins a trophy is making a bigger name for itself," said Dalglish.
"But we have still got a huge opportunity in front of us to make the season relatively successful.
"We've got the Carling Cup final, the FA Cup sixth round at home to Stoke and some really important League matches coming up.
"We can't afford to relax, because this could be a decent season for everybody. We hope that there is still room for improvement and we never stop trying to improve on where we are."

Tough route to final

Liverpool have beaten Exeter, Brighton, Stoke, Chelsea and Manchester City on the way to Wembley and Dalglish believes his team deserve their place in the showpiece occasion.
"For everybody that's connected with the football club it's just reward for the loyalty they have shown and the support they have shown it. For the players, it's an indication of how well they have done as well.
"We are going to do the best we possibly can. We'll continue to try to progress the club and move it forward."
Liverpool, who are aiming to win the League Cup for the eighth time, are odds-on favourites to record victory on Sunday against a side who are currently in the Championship play-off places and who have lost three of their last four matches.
"It's another great occasion for this incredible football club"
- Craig Bellamy
But Dalglish is not taking anything for granted and says his side must not allow themselves to think they have already won the trophy.
"It's not a foregone conclusion and we shouldn't be getting the mindset that it is going to be like that," he said.
"We are playing a team who has achieved every bit as much as we have in getting to the final. We will treat them with the utmost respect as we have done with everybody that we have played against."
Sunday will also be a special occasion for Liverpool's Welsh international striker Craig Bellamy, who will play against his hometown club.
"It will be a strange situation because it'll be the first time I've ever played against them," said Bellamy, who spent last season on loan at Cardiff.
"My father is a Cardiff fan and it's the club I used to go to when I was very young.
"I set one ambition to play for them and I was able to do that, and it's funny how football can work out sometimes. But I might not be on the pitch. We'll see if I'm playing or if I get on.
"It's a great final. It's another occasion for this incredible football club to add to the history and the medals and trophies we've already been able to amass over the years.
"It's another great occasion for us but it's an incredible occasion for Cardiff City."

Wenger issues Arsenal rallying call

Gunners manager wants players to show character in derby with Tottenham

Kyle Walker (right) scored the winner in Spurs' 2-1 win over Arsenal earlier this season
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says Sunday's north London derby against Tottenham is the perfect opportunity for his players to show their character.
The Gunners go into the Emirates Stadium contest after suffering defeats against AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League and Sunderland in the FA Cup.
But Wenger is focusing on the positives and pointed to his side’s recent good record in the Barclays Premier League, with Arsenal losing only once in their last five matches.
"We had disappointing results, especially in Milan, and the Sunderland game was a bit unfortunate," said Wenger.
"We have a good opportunity to show that we have character and mental qualities to play for this club"
- Arsene Wenger
"In the Premier League we have drawn with Bolton, won at Sunderland and beaten Blackburn so let's continue our run.
"We cannot complain. We are in a fantastic job and we have a big game in front of us; to feel sorry for ourselves would be criminal.
"We have a good opportunity to show that we have character and mental qualities to play for this club. Let's go for it."
Arsenal are currently in fourth place in the League on the same number of points as fifth-placed Chelsea and 10 points behind Tottenham in third.
Wenger added: "For us it's an important game because we have an opportunity to come back closer to Spurs, that we can strengthen our position in fourth place and that's of course a very important target in the season."
Tottenham are enjoying a superb campaign having lost only four matches in the League, and are aiming to finish above their north London rivals for the first time since the 1994/95 campaign.
"That's the most important thing for me this year to be honest, to be the top London club," said Spurs boss Harry Redknapp.
"We have had the upper hand in the derby for the last few years, but they are dangerous opposition"
- Harry Redknapp
"We have got a nice cushion at the moment but we have all seen 10 points erode very quickly. We have got a tough run of games coming up.
"We have to keep it going and keep playing the way we are at the moment. That third spot - I want that at least."
And Redknapp added that although his side have got a cushion over Arsenal, they will have to be at their best to win this weekend.
"We have had the upper hand in the derby for the last few years, but they are dangerous opposition," he said. "It will be a difficult game.
"They have had a bad week but they have got good players and are a good side.
"It's important we start well. We want to make sure that in the first 15 minutes or so we get hold of the ball and frustrate them early in the game and get that anxiety coming through in the crowd

A-League review

Easy win for Brisbane

February 25, 2012
Brisbane Roar closed the gap on A-League leaders Central Coast Mariners to three points with a 3-0 win at Perth Glory.

Brazilian striker Henrique gave the defending champions a 21st-minute lead and Besart Berisha then netted twice in quick succession in the 59th and 63rd minutes to put Brisbane in complete control.
Henrique received his marching orders in the 65th minute to leave Brisbane with a man less for the closing stages, but that mattered little to the title hopefuls as they kept the pressure up on Central Coast, who are away to Melbourne Heart tomorrow.
Perth's defeat saw them surrender third spot to Wellington Phoenix, who beat Sydney FC1-0 thanks to a 13th-minute goal from Paul Ifill.
In the day's other match, bottom club Gold Coast United drew 1-1 at home with Melbourne Victory, the visitors taking a 51st-minute lead through Maceo Rigters only for the hosts to level things up six minutes later through Carlos Hernandez.
