Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has said that talented youngster Raheem Sterling's development will be handled with "common sense", after giving the 17-year-old his first-team debut as a substitute over the weekend.
Sterling, who has created a buzz with his displays for the Anfield club's Academy system, came on in the 85th minute of Saturday's 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Wigan, and Dalglish is keen to see the England youth international continue his progress under the right guidance.
"We need to have common sense and make sure we do a professional job on any of the kids coming in," Dalglish was quoted as saying by Liverpool's official website.
"Anybody who comes here must have a chance of being a professional footballer, but he's got a much better chance if we face reality. We've got to be realistic with him."
Dalglish continued: "At the same time we've got to be appreciative and realise it doesn't matter what age they are if they're good enough.
"But there is a bit of time to go yet on all of the kids. Last year we threw in Jack Robbo (Robinson) and Flanno (Jon Flanagan) and it never fazed them, but physically they were a bit stronger than Raheem.
"Every case is going to be different so we've got to look at them all individually and manage them, because we want them here for a long time."
Sterling joined the Liverpool Academy from Queens Park Rangers in February 2010, and the hype surrounding the player intensified when he scored five of his side's goals in a 9-0 FA Youth Cup win shortly after his arrival at Anfield.

Arsenal offer short-term deal to Thierry Henry

Arsenal's record goalscorer Thierry Henry has been offered a two-month loan deal by the Gunners, according to reports.
New York Red Bulls striker Henry, 34, has been training with Arsenal since the MLS season ended, and Arsene Wenger is keen to bring in the Frenchman as cover for Marouane Chamakh and Gervinho who will be heading to the African Cup of Nations next month.
Henry, who is expected to sign the contract in the next 48 hours, could feature in seven Premier League games, as well as FA Cup ties and the Champions League last-16 match with AC Milan.
Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn, a former team-mate of Henry, welcomed the news, but admitted the expected deal was a gamble on Wenger's part.
"I hope everything works out as everyone is expecting. It's terrific news for supporters of Arsenal," Winterburn told Sky Sports News. "Thierry Henry is a winner. If he can make that rub off on players around him it can only be good for them. I hope everything fits into place.
"If it works out well it will be a terrific move by Arsene Wenger, but on the flipside if it doesn't work out well people will say 'why didn't he go out and get a world-class current striker?'

"Will he play in that central role and maybe Robin van Persie move out to the left? Van Persie is the top man at Arsenal at this time. There are a lot of questions to answer but Arsenal would be delighted to have him back for this short time."

Chelsea v Benfica Match Preview

Match preview Chelsea v Benfica Champions League Quarter Finals
Who would’ve thought back in February that Chelsea would overturn a 3-1 defeat against Napoli, to end up as the only English team in the Champions League quarter finals.
Benfica have come a long way to get into the quarter finals, they were top of their group, and having not lost any game, and we should also add that they managed to draw against Manchester United the two times they played. Chelsea also came top in their group having lost only once.
Jesus Jorge, Benfica’s manager has said “If I was Di Matteo, I would ask David Luiz and Ramires for information” This is because both players have been under Jesus Jorge’s management.
Jesus also made it very clear he was upset by Chelsea’s Didier Drogba’s reaction to have been drawn against the Portuguese team “Only Drogba knows what he thought” he continues to say that Drogba doesn’t have reasons to make fun of Benfica or Portuguese football considering that Benfica and Sporting have gotten past England’s top two teams, Manchester United and City.
Brazilian David Luiz has come to the defence of his team mate insisting he was reacting to the thought of facing Barcelona, and that he was not disrespecting Benfica.
Di Matteo had kinder words for their opponents, saying “Benfica plays with great intensity and pressure; they have great players and wouldn’t be in the quarter finals if it this wasn’t so”. Refering to Chelsea he says he would be happy to get even one away goal, and the fact that they have always scored away is very positive.
If Chelsea do secure a win, there will be further talks of Di Matteo being named Chelsea’s next official manager, anyone can see that since Andre Villas-Boas departure, Chelsea seem to be recuperating their form, a win today would further emphasise this improvement.
Possible starting teams:
Benfica: Artur, Pereira, Liusao, Jardel, Emerson, Javi Garcia, Gaitan, Witsel, Aimar, Cardozo, Rodrigo
Chelsea: Cech, Ivanovic, Luiz, Terry, Cole, Lampard, Essien, Ramires, Mata, Sturridge, Drogba

Blues keen on moving semi date

Chelsea are considering lobbying the Football Association to bring their FA Cup semi-final forward by 48 hours should they reach the Champions League semi-finals.
Roberto Di Matteo wants more time to prepare for what could be the first leg of a tie against Barcelona or AC Milan if they beat Benfica in the last eight.
Chelsea's FA Cup semi-final will take place on Sunday, April 15, just three days before a potential Champions League clash.
Liverpool will feature in the other last-four FA Cup match on April 14 because they are allowed not to play on the anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.
Chelsea feel the FA should also be prepared to make a special case for them to play on the Friday night to help them in their quest for European glory.
Caretaker manager Di Matteo said: "I feel we should get more help from the FA over fixtures.
"Absolutely we need it because it doesn't help English teams in the Champions League.
"Benfica played Friday night before our game, so did Napoli before both matches in the last round.
"Their leagues try to give them a lot of help and the best possible advantage.
"We are engaged on this matter, but ultimately someone has to make the decision."

FA to finally appoint a technical director

The Football Association are to appoint a technical director - after a gap of 10 years.
The position will suit an experienced manager who will head up operations at the FA's new national football centre at St George's Park near Burton-upon-Trent.
Howard Wilkinson is the only previous permanent technical director of the FA. He left in 2002 to manage Sunderland, although Les Reed served as acting technical director until 2004.
The new technical director will report to Sir Trevor Brooking, the FA's director of football development, and lead the drive to make St George's Park a centre of excellence for coaches.
Alex Horne, the FA's general secretary, said: "The role of technical director will be crucial as we continue to strive towards improving the technical ability and knowledge of our players and coaches both now and in the future."
The new technical director will have to have a UEFA Pro Licence or the equivalent and is part of the FA's drive to raise the standards of football at both elite and grassroots level.
St George's Park will also have the latest sports science and medical facilities and the new position will work with maximising the influence of cutting-edge developments in the game.
The successful candidate will also work with Premier League and Football League representatives on the new Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP). The EPPP is aimed at boosting the chance of domestic talent breaking through into first-team football and will rank club academies to determine their funding levels.
There has been opposition to the EPPP from some Football League clubs who believe they will get less compensation for talented young players who come through their ranks.
